We all need car insurance. Most state laws require you to be responsible financially, at least through liability coverage up to a certain amount. Usually you will have to show proof of car insurance before you can register your car and get your license plates. Also, if you are every pulled over one of the first things the officer will ask for is proof of car insurance. Now that we know why we have to have car insurance, we need to find ways in which to save on our car insurance. Your monthly premium payments can vary from insurance company to insurance company. Your monthly payments can also be different from the coverage you choose to have.
There are ways you can save on your car insurance.
* Remember to shop around. Check through the telephone book for local car insurance companies and discuss with them the different types of coverage you may need. You can also look on the internet for insurance companies that have more than one car insurance company listed where you can check more than one at a time for each type of coverage.
* Always ask for a higher deductible. You may have to pay out more in case of an accident before you insurance company pays anything, but it can decrease your monthly premium payments.
* For older cars you do not need to have car insurance that covers collision or comprehensive coverage on your car. You will end up paying out more for car insurance than you will collect on your car insurance claim.
* Do not buy sports cars, or high maintenance cars. Expensive cars and cars that have a high theft rate will usually have high car insurance.
* Try to get discounts for low mileage on your car. Some car insurance companies give a discount if you put a certain amount of miles on your car in a year.
* Consider where you live, if you want to lower you monthly premium payments on your car insurance live in a rural area. City living can cost more in car insurance payments.
* Find out if you can get discounts for having air bags or automatic seat belts. Some car insurance policies do have that option.
* Find out if you can get a discount for having antilock brakes. Some car insurance policies do have that option.
* Ask about other discounts that may be available. Your insurance agent should be able to let you know all kinds of discounts that are available for many different things like: insuring more than one automobile, having other insurance policies of different types with them, being accident free for a certain amount of years, your age can in fact allow you discounts if you are over a certain age, and anti theft devices can also help with discounts on some policies.
Car insurance is calculated by first putting drivers into their prospective groups, there are some facts that are usually used to help decide what your monthly car insurance premiums will be. Here are some of the facts that car insurance companies look at when determining your insurance quote:
* Men do have more accidents that women
* If you are under 25 you are considered to be a higher risk
* If you are single, you have more accidents that married drivers
* Your personal driving record will be used to calculate your car insurance (things taken into consideration are: years you have been driving, how many accidents you have had, if you have had any speeding tickets, and also if you have any tickets for drunk driving.)
* How your car is used, work, errands at work, or for recreation.
